afford to travel - Afford to travel non-stop - A simple secret to save money and travel on a budget

Every one of us is different and coming from different backgrounds. However, I believe we all have the chance to do what we want and if traveling the world is what you want than you will be at one point be able to do it.

Living that lifestyle is definitely not easy and there are points where I had literally no money. I am very blessed to have a family I can always rely on, even though so far, I never needed their help. However, I count myself luck to have that certainty and it definitely helps me to take greater risks. Nevertheless, even if you don’t have that safety, don’t throw the towel. There are many ways how you can make it happen.

How I afford to travel so much – It’s all about the Mindset

First things first. Before I start giving you tips I want to quickly build some credibility for those that haven’t followed my journey for a while.

Since 2015 I more or less travelled non-stop. At the same time, I am studying sports science in Munich and try to build a business. However, as I can’t stay away from the ocean and waves I choose to be on the road rather than at home like all my fellow students.

This way of living doesn’t really give much time to work. In between exams, traveling and trying to hustle towards my dreams. However, I always managed to afford my trips and go wherever I wanted.

Though how do I do it, most of you will wonder? Here are some general approaches and things I follow.

Know what you want

First you have to make sure you know what you want. Is traveling a lot really what you want or do you rather wear the fanciest cloths or go out for food every day. If traveling isn’t on first place it’s going to be hard for you to say no to the other things to save the money for traveling. So, make sure you know what you really want.

Once you know what you want you have to make it a priority. You want to travel as much as possible. Always keep that in mind when spending money or working. It makes things so much easier.

Live life with the approach to save

The mantra that guides my living at home is definitely to save money. If you want to afford to travel a lot, you need to save and to really save money you make it a priority. You need to live a cheap life. Don’t go out, don’t buy a lot of things, spend your money wisely.

Put in effort and make sacrifices

Nothing comes easy. I’m sure you’ve heard of that before. Same goes with traveling. You need to work for it if you want or not. And to be honest, I would also rather chill the whole time but I am willing to work and cut down on spare time activities or other things I would only spend money on to save and go traveling instead.

Get the right Mindset: everything is going to be like it’s meant to be

No matter how hard or how broke you are at certain times, always keep in mind, things will work out no matter what. Money isn’t everything and somehow, at least that’s my experience, things will always work out. Even though you have no cent on your bank account. You won’t end up on the streets because you are strong and you can do anything.

So, don’t let that fear hold you back from doing what you want to do!

Now that you are in the right Mindset and have an impression of what you are getting into, here are some hints on living a cheap life according to how I live.

Of cause, this is different for everyone as we are all coming from different points in life.

How to live at home – Save as much money as possible

As I said above, if you want to travel a lot, you have to live a cheap life at home and save money. Otherwise it, and I am sorry to say it like that, not be possible.

But saving is actually not as hard as you might think. Here are some tips I use to save as much money as possible.

Don’t by things you don’t really need

Along with the above, stop spending money on things you don’t need. I hardly buy anything I don’t need for living and just because I have that approach I can save more money than everyone else I know. I know it’s hard. Media is confusing us about what we need. But if you follow the next advice it will become easier.

Think twice before you buy

I hardly buy anything when I am at home besides food and petrol. And whenever I really want something like a new t-shirt or cake or whatever, I think twice. I ask myself “Tara do you really need this now? Or can you wait for it a little longer.”. Do you really need to buy this or is it possible to wait and save the money for your travels?

Also, what I love doing is putting the money I didn’t spend in a jar, so I can see how much money I could save without spending it on unnecessary stuff.

Don’t go out to often, eat at home

Along with not buying anything unnecessary goes not going out that often and instead eating at home or preparing food. Also try to cut down on all activities that cost a lot of money.

Where is the fun though some will wonder? Of cause, you need to live at home as well, just try to do it as cheap as possible.

Work hard

Find a job you like and that is paid well. Work as much as you can. And put that money on an extra account.

Sell things you don’t need

Do you have a lot of stuff? Ever thought of going through it and sorting out what you don’t need anymore. You will be surprised how much you can make by selling everything that’s only collection dust in your room anyway.

Saving money at home of cause isn’t everything. If you are a student or just don’t have a lot of time to make money you will have to travel on a budget as well. Though I have some tips for you here too.

How to travel cheap – Make the money last

Traveling on a budget is easier than you think. You only have to find your way.

Here are some things you can do to save money while traveling

Cheap flights to cheap countries

Maybe your budget doesn’t include a trip to Europe, the states or Australia, but there are so many countries like Asia or even Africa that are cheap for someone coming from above mentioned countries. Consider going there. Also, always look for places where flights are cheap. Most of the time the flights are the most expensive on the whole trip.

Cook for yourself

Same advice as at home. Eating out is most of the time more expensive. So, if you want to save some money, go shopping and get in front of the oven.

Use local transport and free activities

In many countries transport and also activities for tourist is so overpriced. Have a look for local transport and free activities. Also, always compare prices for everything. I am sure there is a cheaper option to find then the one you are looking at currently.

Sleep in hostels

I know dorms… no one really loves them, but they are cheap and you can meet people. And if sleeping in a dorm isn’t your thing, consider camping. Many hostels, especially outside of cities offer special tariffs for campers which are mostly cheaper.

Volunteer or work

Lastly if nothing of the above is enough you can still decide to volunteer for food and accommodation at hostels or farms. Or if you have a working visa you can decide to work for a few months to make some extra money. Btw working abroad can be a really rewarding experience. One I have to do myself sometime soon.

That said, I hope you found some helpful tips and are getting on the right track to save money for your next trip. Let me know how its going.
