Welcome or welcome back to my blog, it’s so good to have you here. Todays post is all about encouraging you to embrace change. But before, let me quickly introduce this format to those who are new.

For all those who are not aware of the concept behind this “chasing dreams” series, here is what it is all about.
Every second week I share some insights into my past two weeks and share with you not only what I’ve been up to but more importantly what I’ve learned though life and everything that has happened.
I reflect on those lessons and see how they’ve helped me to become happier, healthier and closer to my dreams.
Sharing those experiences with you I hope to give you some guidance and inspiration on how you too can see those little lessons life is teaching us every day and take those opportunities as a chance to enhance change and consciousness.

4th to 19th of May
Always ask your parents first
In my last post, I’ve mentioned that I was moving in another flat as I got kicked out of my old one. Unfortunately, it wasn’t done with moving. I had to sort some stuff out as the owner refused to pay back my deposit. I was overwhelmed and didn’t know how to handle the situation.
As I’ve had the luck to always be able to count on my parents I called my dad for advice and only after 10 minutes of conversation I felt calm again and had a solution prepared.
This little incident showed me again, that once you don’t know further, and especially when it concerns trouble, business stuff or other legal things, asking your parents is the best you can do.
They’ve very likely been there and done this before and therefor know how to handle the situation. So even if it might seem like a hard thing to do at first, asking your parents for advice can save you a lot of trouble and headache.
Goodbyes are never easy
But where something ends, something new begins. Last week was my last week of university here in Lisbon. Therefore, it was full of studying and preparing for the final tests and evaluations. However, I won’t lie, it was still not super exhausting.
It was fun because we had to do a group choreography in rhythmic gymnastics and it was quite challenging to come up with it but the group was extremely cool so we made the best out of it and smashed it :D.
By the end of the week however, it was time to say goodbye. I will stay another three months here in Lisbon but I guess most of my fellow student colleagues I won’t see again.That made me a little sad as they are such amazing people and I don’t like the thought of not seeing them again. We had such a great time. So many laughers and fun conversations. It’s hard to think about leaving all this behind.
But, by now I am more used to that missing feeling and I know that where something ends, something else begins and it will be equally beautiful.
Everything has to end at some point, because without change there would be no transformation and without transformation no excitement and no excitement means less happiness.
So, I am looking forward to what’s to come: Another almost three months here with lots of surfing, surf lessons and growing my business. You can say, I’m pretty excited!
Giving up resistance
Though, to accept goodbyes and see them for what they are: A new beginning, you have to give up resistance.
This last week of university was the best practice for me as I not only had to accept having to say goodbye, but also to adjust and go with the flow.
Sometimes things don’t go as planned, and this week, as we had to work in groups I couldn’t stick to my schedule as good as usually but instead had to be more spontaneous and take it as it comes.
This at first upset me and I felt a huge resistance against what was happening at that moment.
However, once I realized that resistance I was able to let it go. I surrendered.
And as soon as I did that I could enjoy those moments again and a practice I would usually have hated became a good time with friends.
Adjust as appropriate
The weekend was already the start for my new routine, I had plenty of surflesson and I started testing my life audit outcomes.
During April and my illness, I realized that the lifestyle I had adapted was no longer working for me and that in order to become more productive and balanced again I had to change things up.
So, I took those past two weeks as an opportunity to evaluate my life.
Which are the 20% tasks that bring me the most joy? What are the 20% tasks that bring me the furthest with my goals? What actually do I want to achieve in the next three months? And want to do I have to change to be more productive and balanced? What are the time wasters, what is causing unhappiness and what disrupts my flow during the day?
I’ve answered all those questions and more. Then I started to think of ways that could be working better. I created a new strategy to improve my lifestyle and tested it immediately.
Step by step I included and am still including things I want to change, thought patterns I have to rewire and habits to drop.
It’s okay to have to change things up, if they are not working anymore. All that will happen is for you to create more happiness for yourself.
Along with that life audit, I realized that I was stuck in a bad habit of over consuming. I love to read, listen to podcasts and learn about things I am interested in. And all those things are amazing and can benefit your life immensely.
However, in excess everything, no matter how good it is, becomes it’s opposite and a distraction to what really is important.
I found myself becoming less and less productive through consuming information as I used it to procrastinate and make excuses to not take action. I always thought I had to first know more about it before I could start doing something.
Furthermore, taking in so much new information every day, kind of burned me out and resulted in great overwhelm that again hindered me to create and come up with my own stuff.
My brain literally was exhausted from all this input that I couldn’t generate output, which again made me unhappy.
So as soon as I realized that over consuming was the reason for most of my imbalance and unhappiness at the moment I dropped it.
Sit with it and embrace change
It was hell scary, because change is always scary. Not knowing what’s to come is frightening.
However, I knew it is the right thing to do.
To overcome my fear, I told myself over and over again, that if it’s not working I can always go back and the worst that can happen is that I not learn something new for a couple weeks. But the best thing in return was that I became happier. Embrace change, that’s what it is all about.
So, the gain was clearly more rewarding as the loss would be devastating. I had nothing to lose.
About half a week in my “not consuming policy” I can ensure you, it’s the best I could have done. My brain is fresh, I was super productive (there are some other things that helped there. I’ll share them soon) and I was relaxed.
Also, taking a break from consuming doesn’t mean I’ll never do it again. I decided to take an entire month off everything besides consumption for joy as in watching 1h of Netflix or YouTube and reading fiction.
After that I will hopefully be super fresh in my brain again and can, in moderation, include learning through consuming again.
Learning by doing
Though, until then I will exchange learning by consuming with learning by doing.
My fear of not learning anything anymore really was unnecessary. Doing, taking action towards your goals or in life in general can teach you so much more than consuming information can.
Of course, we need to read, listen to podcasts and stuff to extend our knowledge, but when it comes to experience and learning for life, nothing is better than trial and error.
Now that I had those major realizations I will use the next weeks to implement as much of them as I can.
Once I have more experience and figured out how to be most productive I will of course share my strategy with you. Then you can use it as inspiration for lifestyle design.
